American Samoa, officially the Territorial Period of American Samoa, is an unincorporated territory located in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of Samoa. It is one of only two U.S. territories with an indigenous population, the other being Palau.
The islands share maritime boundaries with Western Samoa to the east, Wallis and Futuna to the north, and Tokelau to the southeast. It has an area of 581 square miles and a population of 56,000. It is located in Polynesia, 3,800 kilometers east of the Australian coast, about midway between Hawaii and New Zealand.
