In the spring of 1983, the 19-year-old Irish defender was signed by Bob Paisley from Shamrock Rovers for £20,000, making him the renowned manager’s last ever signing for the club. The young defender was viewed as a promising possibility for the future.
Beglin never played a single minute for Paisley. Still, he was gradually integrated into the team by Joe Fagan in late 1984, appearing as an unused substitute in several domestic and European games before being called up for his full Paisley debut in November 1984, a 1-1 draw against Southampton at Firhill.
Jim Beglin was only featured sporadically in the Liverpool side during the following six months, failing to displace Alan Kennedy as the club’s leading left defender. However, he did score his first of three goals for the club in a 3-0 victory over West Ham United in May 1984.
His career took an unprecedented turn for the better when Kenny Dalglish was named Reds manager shortly before the 1985-86 season.
