Whenever people hear ‘health practitioner’, a lot of them often think it is all about medical doctors, and this is not true.

The Ghanaian Health Sector
In times past, the Ghanaian health sector suffered from a lot of things. Some of which are poorly trained personnel, lack of sufficient personnel, inadequate health facilities as well as government negligence.
All these affect the sector negatively. Ghanaians witnessed a high level of mortality with people dying from preventable or curable causes.
The Ghanaian government has since been trying to reconfigure and revamp the health sector of the country. The government now prioritises good healthcare for its citizens.
This new resurgence in the sector has already ushered in a new dawn in the sector achieving incredible results already.
The infant mortality rate has fallen from about 77 in the ’90s to 41 as of 2014. The under-five mortality rate has also reduced from 119 in the ’90s to 60 by 2014.
As part of the government’s efforts to fulfil its promise of better healthcare for its citizen, the government set up several accredited nursing schools across the country. Some of them are ;
List of Accredited Nursing Schools in Ghana
Accredited nursing schools in Ghana can be categorised into private and public owned nursing schools.
The government owns public nursing schools while private individuals own privately nursing schools.

However, both run the same academic curriculum and are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.
Private Nursing schools in Ghana (Accredited)
1. Western Hills Nurses Training College
This nurses training college was established and accredited in the year 2010.
The college is located in Accra. Since its establishment and accreditation, it has grown in stature to become one of the best-ranked nurses’ training school in Ghana.
The courses offered in this prestigious college include:
- General nursing
- Midwifery
- Community health nursing
- Mental nursing
- Health informatics
- Optical technology
- Community nutrition

The requirements for admission into this nursing school is quite straightforward. The applicant must have either of WASSCE or SSCE.
Also, candidates with WASSCE must have at least credit in 3 core subjects and three elective subjects and must have at least 30 points aggregate.
Candidates with SSCE must have credit (A to D) in at least six subjects and must have an aggregate point of 24.
2. Nightingale School of Nursing
Another accredited private nursing school is the Nightingale School of Nursing located in Adenta, Accra. This school boast of modern health facilities and training equipment.
They also offer courses like General Nursing, Clinical health care, Midwifery and Environmental health, etc. This school also provides post-basic and certificate programmes.
The post-basic programmes include ENT nursing, Peri-operative nursing, Ophthalmic nursing, Public health nursing, Anesthesiology and Oral health.
While the certificate programmes are Community health nursing, Community health, Clinical health care and Environmental health.
The school accepts candidates with either of WASSCE or SSCE, provided the candidate has a minimum of 24 aggregate points and not less than six credits.

3. Premier Nurses Training College
This training college is in Kumasi and it came into existence in the year 2014. The National Accreditation Board and the Nurses and Midwifery Council accredits this training college.
The major courses offered in the college are registered general nursing and Health assistant clinical.
4. St. Karol School of Nursing
This nursing school is one of the most popular nursing schools in Ghana. The school partners with the Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. It offers a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery.
Public Accredited Nursing schools in Ghana
1. Koforidua Nurses and Midwifery Training College
The Koforidua Nurses and Midwifery Training College is arguably one of the best in the country. The college sits in the Eastern Region of Ghana and has an affiliation with the University of Ghana.
The college offers courses in Health Assistant Clinical, Community Health Nursing, Midwifery, as well as General Nursing, Mental nursing and Critical care nursing.
2. Bole Community Health Nurses Training College
This nurses’ training college came into existence by the government to fulfil its desire to increase the number of nurses’ training schools in Ghana.
The college offers the following courses: Community health nursing, Public health, General nursing, Psychology, as well as Critical care nursing, Environmental Health and Dentistry.
3. 37 Military Hospital Nurses Training College
This nurse training college was a strictly military nurses training school for a long time before the government recently decided that the school can admit civilian nurses as well.
Some of the courses the school offers are; Health services management, Educational administration, Sociology, Psychology, Biological Sciences, as well as Nutrition & Dietetics and Obstetric nursing.
