There are two types of passport available in Nigeria: Standard, and official passport. Nigerian Immigration Services only issues electronic passports to new applicants. According to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian passports do not come at a fixed price. Some cost as low as ₦15,000 and others comes with a rather outrageous price.

From the table above, it is obvious that a 64-page Nigerian passport is more expensive when compared to a 32 pages Nigerian passport. The Nigerian Immigration Service also said that there will be an additional ₦2,000 charge for Address Verification.

This fee is compulsory for all applicants regardless of age, category, or type.

The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has launched a new international passport with longer validity and enhanced security. According to a statement by the NIS spokesman, Sunday James, “the new and the old passports will work simultaneously.”

The 64-Page Passport in Nigeria with 10 years of validity will cost ₦80,000. While applicants outside the country will have to pay $230. While the 64-Page Passport In Nigeria with 5 years of validity will cost ₦35,000.

The 32-Page Nigerian Passport with 5 years of validity will cost ₦25,000 and $130 if you reside outside the country.

This new passport is made with Polycarbonate technology, the same material used to make unbreakable glass and eyeglass lenses. This allows the new passport to have a better look, enhanced security, shorter processing time, and longer lifespan.

Application Documents For A Nigerian Passport

Before you can apply for an international passport in Nigeria, you must be a recognized Nigerian citizen. If you are not a Nigerian citizen, you can naturalize and apply once your naturalization application is approved.

If you are a Nigerian citizen above 18 years, you must come with the following document to collect your Nigerian passport

  • Birth Certificate [Alternative – Age Declaration].
  • Completed passport application form.
  • 2 passport photographs.
  • Letter of identification from Local Government. [Alternatives – State of origin or residence, National Identity Card, Letter of introduction for employees of government as a Nigerian citizen].
  • Application form duly signed by a Commissioner for Oaths.
  • Marriage certificate [if applicable].
  • Passport payment receipt.

If you are a minor, that is a Nigerian citizen below 18 years old, you have to come with these documents along with your passport application form to complete to obtain a Nigerian passport.

  • Birth certificate or declaration of age.
  • Completed application form.
  • Acknowledgment slip.
  • 2 passport photographs.
  • Local Government Letter of identification.
  • Evidence of Nigerian citizenship.
  • Letter of consent from either parent.
  • Passport payment receipt.
  • Court Order [if applicable].
  • Letter of approval from the State Ministry of Women and Child Development [If applicable].
  • Marriage certificate [if applicable].

How To Apply For Nigerian International Passport Online

To apply for your Nigerian international passport, you’ll have to visit the official website of Nigeria Immigration Service, and click on “PASSPORT”. Alternatively, you can use this link to start your application right away.

Once you are on that page, you need to select the type of passport you want. You either click the STANDARD E-PASSPORT or OFFICIAL E-PASSPORT icon based on the one that meets your preference and then click on the START APPLICATION icon.

Read the instruction carefully, complete the application form on the screen, and upload all the required documents. Once you’ve done that, double-check your details to confirm that your names and details are properly typed, if not, make all due corrections.

Check the I ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS FORM checkbox and click the PRINT button and the SUBMIT APPLICATION button to confirm.

Although you have submitted your application, it will not be processed until your payment has been confirmed.

After that, head to the APPLICANT DETAILS PAGE, click on the PROCEED TO ONLINE PAYMENT to make payment. Once you’re on that page, select your preferred currency and pay.

If you are in Nigeria, select the PAY IN NAIRA option. If you’re abroad, select PAY IN DOLLARS and click CONTINUE to complete your payment. Payment can be made online using your credit or debit card.

You can also make payment for your Nigerian passport in any Nigerian bank nationwide using the serial number on your payment acknowledgment slip.

Choose the currency you want to use for payment (payments can be made in Naira or US Dollars). You can make payments with a credit/debit card or your bank account .

When you select the bank payment option, you’ll be given a list of Nigerian banks you can complete the payment with then click on the CONTINUE button to print your acknowledgment slip and take the slip to the bank to make payment for your passport.

If you choose to pay online, simply click on pay, and you’ll be directed to a secure payment gateway to complete your payment.

The payment gateway is secure, encrypted, and has an SSL certificate installed, so whatever you filled in is private and secure even the numbers on our ATM card.

Once you pay, you’ll be redirected to the NIS portal to submit your application for processing. If you don’t fill comfortable with paying online, you can take your acknowledgment slip to any bank listed on the website to complete your payment.

Once you complete your payment, you’ll be given a Validation Number by the cashier. Keep it safe, it will be used to confirm your payment when you log on to the NIS portal to submit your application.

Your application will be submitted and processed. It takes 48 hours to process a new application.

How To Apply For Nigerian International Passport Offline

If you prefer to apply for an International passport offline, this avenue is also created by the Nigerian immigration service to help to intend applicants to apply for an international passport.

You’ll have to submit your application through a travel agent in Nigeria.
