Just like postal codes, ZIP codes [Zone Improvement Plan] is a system that has been implemented by USPS in 1963 to easily send letters and ship items to different parts of the States.
Both ZIP codes and postal codes have the same meaning and application. Here in Nigeria, they can be called ZIP Codes, Nigerian Postal codes, or Nigerian Post Codes.

How Do Postal Code Work In Nigeria?
Most online websites require your ZIP code when making a registration or completing a transaction. A lot of people make the mistake of filling the form with their phone number to +234 instead of their ZIP code. +234 is an International Dialing Code and very different from ZIP codes. So, what is a ZIP Code?
A postal code is a series of letters, numbers, or alphanumeric sequences used by a country to easily identify regions based on the codes allocated to that region. It is also used by postal services to ship goods and deliver letters easily.
In Nigeria, ZIP codes are made up of 6-digit numbers. The first three numbers help identify the region/district and the last three pinpoint the delivery location, urban area, or post office.
Take Lagos ZIP code for example. The official postal code for Lagos State is 100001. The “100” helps the system understand that you stay in Lagos state, while the “001” helps the system identify which exact part of Lagos you stay.
Whenever you are asked online to fill in your country postal code, you are not asked for your area ZIP code like Lagos, Abuja, or Ibadan, you are asked to enter Nigeria’s internationally allocated ZIP code which is 110001, 23401, or 00176.
So, searching for Lagos postcode, Abuja ZIP code, Ibadan postal code or any other Nigerian city postal code could make your registration invalid. Nigerian ZIP codes have been listed by the Nigerian Postal Service and allocated to every State in the country. All 36 States in Nigeria is divided into 9 regions.
