History Of Sterling Bank

Nigeria Acceptances Limited, a subsidiary of Sterling Bank Plc, was incorporated in 1960. (NAL). In 1969, the bank became Nigeria’s first merchant bank. Between 1974 and 1992, the Bank was administered in cooperation with Grindlays Bank Limited, Continental International Finance Company Illinois, and American Express Bank Limited, following the indigenization decree of 1972.

The Bank was partially privatized in 1992 and listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange as a public corporation (NSE). The federal government sold its remaining shareholding in the bank eight years later, in 2000, essentially making it a fully privatized organization.

As part of the Nigerian banking industry’s consolidation, NAL Bank, combined with four other Nigerian banks, Magnum Trust Bank, NBM Bank, Trust Bank of Africa, and Indo-Nigeria Merchant Bank (INMB), to establish Sterling Bank in January 2006. Since then, the merging entities have been effectively integrated and operating as a single entity.

Sterling Bank is now a national operating commercial bank, having sold its assets in subsidiaries and affiliate entities under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s repeal of universal banking. Sterling Bank Plc purchased the former Equatorial Trust Bank franchise in mid-2011.

The Bank’s operations and products cover the aspects of Retail & Consumer Banking, Commercial Banking, Institutional Banking, and Corporate Banking.
