In Nigeria, we have hundreds of institutions with high tuition fees paid annually. Out of these institutions, it is encouraging to discover that few in fact, I can almost say it’s tuition-free because no matter your financial strength, you can afford them!

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU Zaria)

The first school on our list is the Ahmadu Bello University.  ABU Zaria is a federal government university located in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The university was initially named the University of Northern Nigeria after its establishment on the 4th of October 1962.

It was created to be the university for the northern part of the country. And this gives reason to why the school was even named after the first premier of Northern Nigeria, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello.

However, this is not necessarily the case anymore. There are now many other northern universities in the country including Federal University, Gasua, Yobe state, and Bayero University, in Kano state.

ABU Zaria owns one of the largest teaching hospitals in Nigeria, ABU Teaching Hospital.  This hospital is also where the school’s medical students have their camp.

University of Ibadan(UI)

Next on our list is the University of Ibadan. The University of Ibadan is one of the prestigious universities in the country. It was established in 1948, and it became the very first university in Nigeria.

UI was formally a small college of the then University of London, until 1962 when it became an independent university of its own. The school sits in the beautiful city of Ibadan, in Oyo state.

The University of Ibadan has sixteen Faculties which include Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Agriculture, as well as the Social Sciences. The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, (FUNAAB) was founded on the 1st of January, 1988. The university used to be one of the quarters of a four-parts university of technology until it was demerged in the year 1988.

The University of Lagos was founded in 1962 and is one of the oldest universities in Nigeria. The main campus for the school is located at Akoka, Yaba.

The acceptance fee alone is  ₦20,000 and failure to pay the acceptance fee as soon as possible may result in the withdrawal of your admission.

The school fees for returning students is around ₦30,500 for Science Students and ₦37,500 for the Non-Science Students.

For Postgraduate studies, tuition is around  ₦110,500- ₦155,500 for returning students, non-science and science departments respectively.

New (science and non-science) postgraduate students will be paying around  4,000 the first time, and then consecutive payments will be  ₦16,000.

University of Calabar (UNICAL)

The University of Calabar is a federal university that was established in 1975 and is located in Eta Agbo road, cross river state, Nigeria.

The acceptance fee alone is ₦30,000, and this is payable immediately once admission has been offered. Failure to pay the acceptance fee as soon as possible may result in the withdrawal of your entry.

The school fees for new students is around ₦64,000 for Science Students and  ₦45,000 for the Non-Science Students. This amount excludes academic gown and project supervision.

The school fees for returning students is around ₦31,000 for Science Students and  ₦32,000 for the Non-Science Students.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

Did you know that Obafemi Awolowo University was formally called the University of Ife? It’s true. However, the name metamorphosed to Obafemi Awolowo University in the year 1987, in honor of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

OAU is a federal government university. The university is in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.  It came into existence in 1961 although lectures did not commence until October 1962.

The cost of school fees for new students ranges from  N151,200 to N190,200, and for returning student, the price ranges from  N89,200 to N128,200.

Besides, the exact amount depends mainly on the department and course of study. Moreover, accommodation in OAU is also cheap as one student bed space costs only  ₦3,090 for new students and  ₦2,590, for returning students.

National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

Next on our list is the National Open University of Nigeria. Apart from the fact that this school has the benefits of flexible programs and schedules, it also offers this flexibility at a very affordable cost. Let us see how much the school fees for NOUN is.

In this university, new students are pay  ₦99,500, which includes registration fee, caution and orientation fees amongst others. Returning students fee is a total of  ₦59,500, which includes Registration and ICT amongst others.

University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)

The University of Abuja was established in the year 1988 and is located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

UNIABUJA has two campuses. The main campus is at Gwagwalada and home to faculties like Arts, Management Science, Engineering, College of Medicine; as well as Agriculture among others.

University of Benin (UNIBEN)

The University of Benin was first established as an Institute of technology in 1970, but then later elevated to university status in the year 1971. The school is located in Uselu, Benin City.

UNIBEN has thirteen faculties including Faculty of Arts, Sciences,  Faculty of Social Sciences, Education, Agriculture, Law, Engineering, Dentistry, School of Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Management Sciences, and Education.

Also, the acceptance fee for UNIBEN is  ₦60,000, which is payable immediately upon admission.

New students in the College of Medical Sciences are to pay a tuition fee of ₦190,000. Students outside of these departments will pay  ₦150,000. Returning student’s school fees range from  ₦80,000-  ₦100,000, depending on the course of study.
