About UNIZIK

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, also known as UNIZIK is a Federal university in Nigeria located in the southeastern part of Nigeria. UNIZIK is situated in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State.

This federal institution was named after Chief Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Who is a national hero and the first president of Nigeria. Its main campus is located in Awka South, Awka, Anambra State. With Geo-location of 6.242889N and 7.118289E.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University popularly known as UNIZIK was Established in 1991 with its motto “Discipline, Self Reliance, and Excellence” as the foundation of all its actions. The official website for The Nnamdi Azikiwe University is www.unizik.edu.ng.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University was formerly known as Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) which was established through Law No. 7 of 30 July 1980 by the state Government.

UNIZIK started with multiple campuses in Abakaliki, Enugu, Awka, and Nnewi. But in time, they all merged to become the great Nnamdi Azikiwe University you know today. UNIZIK became a property of the Federal Government of Nigeria on the 15th day of July 1992.

UNIZIK also has two other campuses other than the one in Awka. One of the other campuses is located at Nnewi (Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital [NAUTH]) and another at Agulu (Faculty of Pharmacy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University). 

During the 2004/2005 academic year UNIZIK had a population of 24,706 full-time and 12,476 students for part-time programs, At the moment UNIZIK has a population of over 120,000 students both part-time and full-time programs including JAMB, JUBEP, Sand-wish, and other Post-Graduate programs.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University is a public institution made up of 14 faculties offering a series of courses of study ranging from Law to Arts, Natural Sciences, Engineering, African Languages, European Languages, Management Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Social Sciences, and Education.

How To Get Admission In UNIZIK

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK usually sells their POST-UTME application form around May and August every year. Every aspirant who performed well in their JAMB/UTME exam and selected UNIZIK as their first choice institution is expected to register for UNIZIK POST-UTME examinations.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University is one of the most sought-after educational institutions in the whole Southeastern part of Nigeria. Approximately 600,000 university aspirants opt for UNIZIK as their first-choice tertiary institution every year.

If you choose UNIZIK as your first choice institution, you are probably competing with over 100,000 students or aspirants for a department that wants to admit less than 500 students. So, set your phone aside and be serious with your book.

If the course you are applying for in UNIZIK is a very competitive course like law, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, or Mass Communication, make sure you score 30 marks above the cut-off mark if you want a faster admission.

UNIZIK Admission Requirements

Here are the admission requirements that you must meet before you can be admitted into UNIZIK to study your given course.

1. UNIZIK UTME Exams Requirements

This type of admission is usually given to students who pass their JAMB exams. The Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) will give you admission to study in UNIZIK if:

  • You attain the minimum UME score and satisfy the assessment in the POST-UTME screening (usually above 55%)
  • You have an O’level result with at least 5 credit passes
  • They satisfy the Faculty/Departmental requirements for their program as approved by the Senate.

2. UNIZIK Direct Entry Requirements

If JAMB refuses to favor you, this method is also advisable, although it’s a long cut. This method is for all UNIZIK aspirants who have already finished a program in another institution or registered through Jupeb

The are UNIZIK admission requirements for Jubep and direct entry students.

  • You must meet the requirements of Admission by UTME
  • You must possess at least one of the following qualifications Advanced levels of GCE, SSCE, or HSC, credit level in at least two major subjects in NCE, a first university degree, HND or its equivalent, or a minimum of a lower credit pass at ND or university diploma in relevant discipline.

3. UNIZIK Pre-Science Programme Requirements

This type of admission is only for science students. You will register for the UNIZIK pre-science program and study there for a year, before writing your POST-UTME. Once you write your UNIZIK POST-UTME, you will be admitted directly to the 200 level and start your lectures as a year 2 student.

Going to Mbauku for tutorials and lectures is not such a bad idea. It is recommended for those in science classes to start and prepare them for the university. This is the admission given to UNIZIK aspirants.

4. UNIZIK Inter-University Transfer Requirements

This is only done after the first year at the undergraduate level if you meet the requirements set by the university admission committee. Once you meet their requirements, you can change your institution to UNIZIK.

All aspirants of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University must be at least 16 years old by/on the 1st day of October of the year they are/were admitted. And also the minimum age for the Continuous Education Program must have attained the age of 22. These are the age requirements of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The dates have not been released by the school authorities but it is usually written throughout the weekdays in August.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University School Fees vary among departments and faculties. But on average, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University School Fees range from ₦60,000 to ₦70,000 per academic session for new students.

For returning students, it is far cheaper. It costs about ₦20,000 to ₦25,000 – also depending on the course/department.

UNIZIK Facilities

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University is an urban campus consisting of well-tarred roads and trees planted in every square inch. ICT and technology used in UNIZIK are state-of-the-art and regularly updated.

UNIZIK also boasts of more than 3,000 desktop computers found in the Digital Library for research purposes, lecture halls with free WI-FI, and other research and innovative equipment used for practicals and tests.

There are a lot of Lodges and hostels available within the school premises of which a lot. 

Most lodges are found in Ifite, Holy Family, P & P, and The Eke-Awka market. While the school has  Two boys’ hostels equipped to contain over 800 students each, the girls’ hostel contains close to 1,000 female students, and the Emelda hostel shelters more than 1,200 students.

These hostels provide clean water, a conducive reading environment, over 16 hours of power supply, a recreation hall, a cinema equipped with a plasma T.V., a Decoder, a captivating landscape, and recreation centers including football, basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts and fields. 

The Faculty of Agriculture is also not left out, state of the fish pond, and poultry farms with hectares of land at their disposal. There are also taxi cabs and other reliable means of transport provided for students.
