History Of Union Bank

Union Bank is one of Nigeria’s most vital, well-trusted, and oldest banks. Union Bank of Nigeria has a long and illustrious history that dates back to 1917 when it opened its doors for business as a colonial bank. In 1925, it was acquired by Barclays and renamed “Barclays Bank Dominion,” colonial and overseas, remaining until the early 1970s.

To conform with newly implemented banking and investment legislation, 40% of the bank’s stock was sold to Nigerian people and businesses in 1979.

Since acquiring Universal Trust Bank plc in the early 1990s, the bank has experienced unprecedented growth. The federal government of Nigeria sold the bank to Union Bank of Nigeria in 1993, and Union Bank of Nigeria bought the former universal trust bank plc. In 2005, it absorbed the former affiliate Union Merchant Bank and raised capital from shareholders through a suitable issue.

Union Bank is a large commercial bank serving individuals, small and medium-sized companies, and large corporations and organizations. In July 2009, it was rated the 556th largest bank worldwide and the 14th largest bank in Africa. As of Mar 31, 2018, the bank’s asset base was estimated at NGN1, 381 billion (4.1billion USD). The shareholders’ equity at that time was estimated at NGN286 billion (851 million USD).

The management board is led by Mudassir Amray, who serves as the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He has been at the bank’s helm since June 2022, after the landmark integration between Titan Trust Bank and Union Bank of Nigeria.
