History Of Union Bank

Union Bank is one of the strongest, well trusted and oldest banks in Nigeria. Union Bank of Nigeria has a long and illustrious history that dates back to 1917 when it first opened its doors for business as a colonial bank. In 1925, it was acquired by Barclays and renamed “Barclays Bank Dominion,” colonial and overseas, where it remained until the early 1970s.

Union Bank’s history dates back to 1836 when a royal charter was granted to London bankers and British merchants to undertake banking operations throughout the Caribbean. The colonial Bank was created as a result of these investor groups.

In 1971, Barclays incorporated the bank in Nigeria as Barclays Bank of Nigeria Plc, and in 1979, it sold a large portion of its stock to the Nigerian government and public sector. To conform with newly implemented banking and investment legislation, 40% of the bank’s stock was sold to Nigerian people and businesses in 1979.

Since acquiring Universal Trust Bank plc in the early 1990s, the bank has experienced unprecedented growth. The federal government of Nigeria sold the bank to Union Bank of Nigeria in 1993, and the former universal trust bank plc was bought by Union Bank of Nigeria. In 2005, it absorbed the former affiliate Union Merchant Bank and raised capital from shareholders through a right issue.

Union Bank is a large commercial bank, serving individuals, small and medium-sized companies, as well as large corporations and organizations. In July 2009, it was rated the 556th largest bank in the world and the 14th largest bank in Africa. As of Mar 31, 2018, the bank’s asset base was estimated at NGN1, 381 billion (4.1billion USD). The shareholders’ equity at that time was estimated at NGN286 billion (851 million USD).

The Union Bank of Nigeria was formerly owned by Union Global Partners Limited, however, Titan Trust Bank (TTB) has acquired an 89.39% stake in Union Bank. That being said, Titan Trust Bank is the new owner of the Union Bank of Nigeria.

The management board is led by Emeka Emuwa, who serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank. He has been at the helm of the bank since November 2012.
